Types of Searches and Their Applications

As a security officer, conducting searches is an essential duty to ensure safety, prevent theft, and comply with site policies. The type of search required depends on the site’s security needs, the individuals involved, and the client’s policies regarding staff and visitor searches.

Your Assignment Instructions (A.I.s) will outline your responsibilities, and it is crucial to follow these guidelines at all times. Searches may be conducted on:

  • People and their belongings (bags, pockets, clothing with consent)
  • Vehicles (cars, delivery trucks, or motorcycles)
  • Property (rooms, buildings, or intellectual assets)

1. Types of Searches:

  • Routine Searches – Regular searches conducted as part of daily security protocols.
  • Random Searches – Unannounced searches where individuals or vehicles are selected randomly (e.g., searching every fourth person).
  • Targeted Searches – Focused searches based on suspicion or security alerts (e.g., inspecting a suspicious package or vehicle).
  • General Searches – Everyone is subject to a search, often at high-security locations or events.

If an employee refuses a reasonable search request, they may face:

  • Disciplinary action for breaking their contract.
  • Suspension or dismissal if the refusal is serious.

2. Searching people and their property

Security officers conduct searches to prevent unauthorised items like weapons, drugs, or stolen property from entering or leaving a site. Searches may be required before entry or exit, depending on site policies.

  • Entry Searches – Prevent prohibited items from being brought in.
  • Exit Searches – Ensure no theft or removal of company property.
  • Bag & Property Searches – Inspect personal belongings for security risks.

Best Practices:

✔ Follow legal and ethical guidelines
✔ Be professional and respect privacy
✔ Ensure searches are fair and documented

Proper searches help maintain a safe and secure environment for all.
