How to become a security guard?

Starting a career as a security guard is an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys helping others and maintaining safety in various places like shops, offices, and events. The demand for trained security staff is growing, so now is the perfect time to take the right steps to enter this field. London Security College offers the courses you need to begin your career.

Step 1: Choose the Right Course

To work legally as a security guard in the UK, you must complete a training course and get an SIA (Security Industry Authority) licence.

There are two main courses to choose from:

  • Security Guard Course: This course prepares you to work as a security guard in locations like shopping centres, offices, warehouses, and more. However, this course does notcover you to work in places that serve alcohol, like bars and nightclubs.
  • Door Supervisor Course: This course includes everything covered in the Security Guard Course but also qualifies you to work as a door supervisor. A door supervisor is needed in places like pubs, clubs, and other licensed venues where alcohol is served. A big advantage of taking the Door Supervisor Course is that it qualifies you for bothsecurity guard and door supervisor jobs, giving you more flexibility in finding work.

At London Security College, we recommend that our students take the 6-day Door Supervisor Course, which includes first aid training. By choosing this course, you will have the qualifications to work in various environments, increasing your job opportunities.

Step 2: Complete the Training

Once you choose the course that best suits your career goals, you will start training. The courses are designed to teach you everything you need to know to work in security.

If you take the Door Supervisor Course with London Security College, your training will include:

  • First Aid: This is a basic requirement for all security professionals and teaches you how to handle emergency situations like injuries and accidents.
  • Working in the Private Security Industry: You’ll learn about the laws and regulations related to working as a security guard or door supervisor.
  • Conflict Management: This part of the course will teach you how to calmly and professionally deal with difficult or aggressive people.
  • Physical Intervention: In some cases, you may need to step in physically to stop a dangerous situation, and this part of the course will teach you how to do that safely and legally.

The course lasts 6 days, and after you complete it, you will take a few exams to test what you have learned.

Step 3: Get Your SIA Licence

After completing your training, you must apply for your SIA licence. This licence is required for anyone who wants to work as a security guard or door supervisor in the UK.

The application process is simple, and we at London Security College are happy to guide you through it.

To apply for your licence, you will need to:

  1. Complete your course successfully.
  2. Provide proof of identity and 2 Proofs of Address.
  3. Pay the SIA licence fee (currently around £184).

Once your licence is approved, it will be valid for three years, after which you can renew it.
